The old city
Whichever place you decided to stay in, the city of Rhodes has to be on your must-visit list. The old part of the city has been under UNESCO protection since 1988. In addition to Greek culture, remnants of Italian and Turkish culture can be recognized here because it was under the occupation of the Turks, and later the Italians.
Looking even deeper into the history, it belonged to the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, and of course the Ottomans.
You enter the old part through the Gate of Freedom. It dates back to the medieval period and is protected by walls built in the 15th century. Medieval buildings, straight streets, minarets, old houses with balconies, fountains, and alleys under the shade of trees, all together affect the impression of the atmosphere of old times. You’ll be walking along the Street of the Knights, one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe. At the end of the street is the Archaeological Museum.
Among the sights within the Old Town, it is worth visiting Suleiman’s Mosque, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Monastery of St. George, etc.
The new part is marked by 20th-century architecture. It is full of shops and taverns that tourists try to enjoy. Be sure to visit the Aquarium located near the center. The building, which houses animals representing the inhabitants of the Aegean Sea, dates from 1935.
